Frequently Asked Questions About Sikkens Novatech
Which brush do I need?
For applying Sikkens Novatech primer, we recommend using a VP all-round synthetic brush. This synthetic brush ensures an even distribution of the stain on the wooden surface and helps achieve a smooth and uniform finish. The synthetic brush features a selection of synthetic fibres that absorb and evenly distribute the stain.
Which roller do I need?
To apply Sikkens Novatech primer with a roller, it is recommended to use a short-pile microfibre roller. These rollers are suitable for applying water-based products like Sikkens Novatech and ensure an even distribution of the primer on the wooden surface. Short-pile rollers are particularly suitable for smooth surfaces, while a medium-pile roller can be used for surfaces with more texture or relief.
When should I use this product?
Sikkens Novatech primer is used when you want to protect and enhance wooden surfaces outdoors. It can be applied to various wooden constructions such as cladding, window frames, doors, garden sheds, pergolas, and wooden furniture. The primer is particularly suitable for softwoods like pine but can also be applied to hardwood. Using this primer ensures good adhesion, moisture regulation, and durability, protecting the wood against weather conditions, moisture, and UV radiation.
What are the benefits of Sikkens Novatech?
Sikkens Novatech primer offers several benefits for protecting and enhancing outdoor wooden surfaces. It provides excellent durability and weather resistance, protecting the wood from weather conditions, moisture, and UV radiation. The primer is easy to apply with a brush or roller and has a user-friendly formula that flows well and spreads evenly over the wooden surface. Additionally, the primer is moisture-regulating, allowing the wood to breathe and release moisture without causing peeling or cracking of the paint layer.
Sikkens Novatech primer is specifically developed for use on softwoods like pine but can also be applied to hardwood. Maintaining surfaces treated with Novatech is relatively simple. Regular cleaning, sanding, and reapplying the primer every two years will keep the woodwork in good condition and maintain its aesthetic appeal.
What is the coverage per m²?
The coverage of Sikkens Novatech primer is between 16 and 20 square metres per litre. This means that one litre of the primer is sufficient to cover an area of 16 to 20 m², depending on the porosity and texture of the wood and the application method.
Actual coverage may vary depending on factors such as the roughness and absorption of the wooden surface, the application method, and environmental conditions. Therefore, we recommend purchasing slightly more primer than needed for your surface.
What finish does this primer have?
Sikkens Novatech primer has a matt to satin finish, depending on the chosen colour and the type of wood used. It is important to note that the primer is primarily intended as a base layer to protect and prepare the wood for the finishing coat. For the final gloss and appearance of the wooden surface, you should choose a suitable finishing product, such as Sikkens Cetol TGL Satin Plus or Cetol TGX Gloss systems, which are available in various gloss levels.
Step-by-step guide
To apply Sikkens Novatech primer correctly, we recommend following this step-by-step guide:
- Preparation:
Ensure the wooden surface is clean, dry, and free from dirt, grease, wax, and loose paint. Lightly sand the surface with fine sandpaper (e.g., grit size 180-220) and remove the sanding dust.
- Stirring:
Stir the primer thoroughly to ensure a homogeneous consistency and to properly mix any settled pigment.
- Application:
Apply the primer using a synthetic brush or a short-haired microfibre roller. Work in the direction of the wood grain and spread the primer evenly over the surface.
- Drying Time:
Allow sufficient drying time before proceeding with the next coat or finishing products. The drying time depends on temperature and humidity, but generally, aim for a drying time of at least 16 hours at 20°C and 65% relative humidity.
- Second Coat (if necessary):
If a second coat of primer is required, lightly sand the surface again with fine sandpaper and remove the sanding dust. Apply the second coat as described in step 3.
- Finishing:
After applying the primer and allowing the correct drying time, proceed with the application of a suitable finishing product, such as Cetol TGL Satin Plus or Cetol TGX Gloss systems, following the manufacturer's instructions.
- Cleaning:
Clean your brushes and rollers with water and soap, rinse thoroughly, and allow them to dry before storing.
Make sure to work at a temperature between 5-30°C and a maximum relative humidity of 85% for optimal results.
