VP Platinum Topcoat PU
VP Topcoat PU is a scratch and abrasion-resistant 2-component epoxy coating based on polyurethane. VP Topcoat PU is the most durable finish available. It is therefore suitable for extremely heavy-duty floors. VP Topcoat PU is polyurethane-based (PU) combined with thinner, which means the product has a strong odour during application. VP Topcoat PU is highly resistant to mechanical loads, making it suitable for load-bearing applications such as cars, forklifts, and lorries. The first layer of the topcoat must be diluted with 10-15% Epoxy EP thinner.
Pros and Cons
- Scratch and abrasion-resistant
- Easy to apply
- Polyurethane-based
- Strong odour during application
Where can I use VP Topcoat PU?
VP Topcoat PU is an extremely durable topcoat with versatile applications. It is suitable for garages and warehouses. Its high strength makes it ideal for use in areas where forklifts and lorries operate.
Can I use VP Topcoat PU outdoors?
VP Topcoat PU is suitable for outdoor use. Its thinner-based composition and UV filter ensure it can be applied without issue. However, please consider weather conditions and ambient temperature during application.
Is VP Topcoat PU suitable for car garages?
VP Topcoat PU is an excellent choice for car garages. Its exceptional mechanical strength makes it capable of easily handling cars, lorries, and forklifts.
Can I use VP Topcoat PU in my living room?
We do not recommend using VP Topcoat PU in homes. Being thinner-based, it has a strong odour and is more expensive than alternative options like Epoxy WA. This product is best suited for industrial use due to its high quality and cost.
What is the drying time for VP Topcoat PU?
Drying times for 2-component products vary, depending on humidity and temperature. Here is a guideline based on a temperature of 20°C:
Overschilderbaar (recoat): 16 hours
Beloopbaar (walkable): 1 day
Lichte belasting (light load): 2 days
Zware belasting (heavy load): 7 days
Stofdroog (dust dry): 45 minutes
Kleefvrij (tack-free): 3 hours
Potlife: 6 hours
Which surfaces are suitable for VP Topcoat PU?
VP Topcoat PU can be used on various surfaces. Below is a guide for specific surfaces and preparation steps:
Rough concrete: Usage is approximately 7 m² per litre (10-litre container covers 70 m²). No primer required. Dilute the first layer 10-15%. Degrease, lightly sand, and clean the floor. Apply two layers for optimal thickness and coverage. For extremely heavy loads, apply a third transparent PU coat.
Stone: Usage is approximately 7 m² per litre (10-litre container covers 70 m²). No primer required. Similar steps to rough concrete.
Cement screed: Approximately 7 m² per litre (same as above). No primer needed.
Levelling compound: Approx. 8 m² per litre (10-litre container covers 80 m²). First layer diluted by 15%. Additional steps as above. If surface has a sealed structure, sand extra well and dilute further to improve adhesion.
Smoothed concrete: Usage of 12 m² per litre (10-litre container covers 120 m²). A primer is always required for adequate adhesion. Additional steps include degreasing, sanding, applying an epoxy primer, and two further coats.
Old paint layers: First create a test patch to check compatibility. Usage is approximately 12 m² per litre.
How much VP Topcoat PU should I use per m²?
The consumption rate depends heavily on the surface type. For general guidance:
Rough concrete: Approx. 7 m² per litre.
Stone: Approx. 7 m² per litre.
Cement screed: Approx. 7 m² per litre.
Levelling compound: Approx. 8 m² per litre.
Smoothed concrete: Approx. 12 m² per litre with primer.
Old paint layers: Approx. 12 m² per litre.
What brush should I use for epoxy coating?
We recommend using disposable brushes for epoxy coatings as it is not feasible to reuse them. Avoid using expensive brushes.
What paint roller should I use?
We advise using a nylon roller for epoxy coatings. These rollers ensure an even thickness and streak-free finish. Like brushes, the rollers should be discarded after use.
What is the mixing ratio for Topcoat PU?
VP Topcoat PU has a mixing ratio of 4:1, meaning 4 parts coating to 1 part hardener. For example, a 5-litre pack contains 4 litres of coating and 1 litre of hardener.
Step-by-step guide for applying VP Topcoat PU
Step 1: Check
Ensure the floor is dry. A moisture meter should read between 3% and 4%. Alternatively, tape a piece of clear plastic to the floor for 24 hours; if moisture or condensation appears, the floor is still too damp. Wait two weeks for freshly poured floors before coating. Check surface firmness by taping and peeling or attempting to cut with a utility knife.
Step 2: Preparation
The floor must be dry, clean, and free from dust and grease. Degrease with a suitable cleaner, vacuum thoroughly, and sand lightly if there are any imperfections.
Step 3: Application
Mix component A (coating) with component B (hardener) thoroughly for at least 3 minutes. Apply an initial diluted layer to penetrate the surface, followed by subsequent undiluted layers for optimal thickness. Ventilation is crucial to ensure a proper finish.
