Carbolineum (Latin derivation of carbo = coal and oleum = oil) is a thin, viscous, reddish-brown liquid obtained from coal distillation. It was a classic wood preservative but has been banned in many European countries due to harmful side effects, including the Netherlands since 1 November 2001. It is often referred to as creosote oil, tar oil, and carbol, sometimes mistakenly referred to as carboleum. Creosote, another coal tar distillate, has a similar composition and applications. The tar deposits in a chimney are also creosote.
