Carbolineum

The best carboleum deals with us

Carbolineum is most familiar to the older generation. It was widely used to protect wood from rot and fungus. It was commonly applied to underwater posts, fences, and garden sheds. Since 2001, carboleum has been banned in the Netherlands and, from as early as 1991, in Germany. At Verfmenger, we offer various substitutes like Koopmans Ecoleum. Additionally, you can find weekly carboleum deals on our website.

Carbolineum Black

Carbolineum Black, renowned for its durability and protective properties, is perfect for a variety of wood applications. This bitumen-based product is specially designed for effective application on untreated, rough, and finely sawn wood. For the best results, ensure the wood is fully dry before application. Using a wood moisture meter, the moisture level can be easily measured and should not exceed 15%. The lower the moisture content, the better Carbolineum Black will penetrate the wood. This product is particularly suited for treating wooden sheet pilings, mills, cladded barns, posts, fences, garden wood, pergolas, mooring posts, and sleepers. Carbolineum Black from Verfmenger can also be applied to aged or weathered wood and is compatible with surfaces previously treated with carbolineum or coal tar, making it a highly versatile choice for many wood treatment projects.

Carbolineum Brown

Carbolineum Brown is also a popular alternative to traditional, harmful carboleum. It shares many of the same protective properties as Carbolineum Black but offers a warm, brown finish that is ideal for creating or maintaining a natural appearance. Like its black counterpart, Carbolineum Brown is weather-resistant and significantly extends the lifespan of wood by protecting it from moisture, fungi, and insects. This makes it an excellent choice for cladding, fencing, and garden fences, as well as larger projects such as outdoor furniture and wooden window frames.

Carbolineum alternatives

It goes without saying that such a harmful product is no longer sold in stores. Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives available today. At any DIY store or at verfmenger.com, you will find tar replacement products that function like carboleum without the associated health risks. One well-known example is Hermadix Carbeauleum. Have you come across the term bruinoleum? Bruinoleum is a great carboleum substitute, visually resembling the original product. However, it is an oil-based product with synthetic resins and colourfast pigments. Apply these substitutes using a large block brush. Ensure your hands and skin never come into contact with the product, as even modern versions can significantly irritate the skin.

Carbolineum Ban

Carbolineum has been banned since 2001, for several good reasons. After the prohibition, it quickly became clear that carboleum was packed with substances that could cause both bladder and skin cancer. These properties were only part of the many disadvantages associated with using this product. Skin contact could cause severe burns, and working in direct sunlight could result in sunburn. This was due to phototoxicity, a process whereby the skin burns when exposed to sunlight while using the product. Fortunately, verfmenger.com offers a variety of safe alternatives that eliminate these risks.

What is carboleum?

Carbolineum is a kind of tar paint offering protection against rust, rot, and moisture. It was popular among the older generation and widely used to protect wood from rot and fungi. Common applications included underwater posts, fences, and garden sheds. Carbolineum (Latin derivation of carbo = coal and oleum = oil) is a thin, viscous, reddish-brown liquid obtained from coal distillation. It was a classic wood preservative but has been banned in many European countries due to harmful side effects, including the Netherlands since 1 November 2001. It is often referred to as creosote oil, tar oil, and carbol, sometimes mistakenly referred to as carboleum. Creosote, another coal tar distillate, has a similar composition and applications. The tar deposits in a chimney are also creosote.

What types of carboleum are there?

Carbolineum and tar paints all have the same function, namely protecting your surface from moisture and thereby preventing rotting or rusting. However, different brands are available at Verfmenger. Carbolineum is no longer permitted in the Netherlands, so other substitutes such as Koopmans Ecoleum are now used instead.

Advice from the Professional

Carbolineum is a wood stain that protects fences and other wooden items from weather influences. By applying carbolineum to your outdoor wood, it remains in good condition for longer. Carbolineum contains tar and has a strong odour during application, which persists on warm days. Since 2001, carbolineum has been unavailable in the Netherlands due to its harmful effects. Fortunately, alternative products deliver the same results without health hazards. For example, Koopmans Ecoleum is an excellent product for protecting wood from weather damage. Verfmenger advises using safer products to preserve and protect wooden surfaces.
