 Black Stain

The best black wood stain deals with us

There are two different types of wood stain. You can choose between a transparent stain and an opaque stain. Are you looking for black stain on offer? First, you must decide between an opaque black or a transparent black that allows the wood grain to remain visible. At Verfmenger, we have various products on offer each week. Additionally, we always apply the lowest price guarantee.

What is black wood stain?

Black wood stain is an opaque stain that provides a stylish and durable finish for outdoor wood. It offers excellent protection against weather conditions such as rain and sunlight, extending the lifespan of the wood. With its deep, rich colour, black stain adds a modern and elegant look to garden furniture, fences, and sheds. For the best results, we recommend applying two layers to a well-prepared surface. This ensures a beautifully finished and protected surface for years to come. An opaque black stain is a type stain that can only be made in solid colours and not in transparent shades. With these stains, the wood grain will not be visible. However, with transparent black stains, you will retain the wood grain. Outdoor stains are also all weather-resistant, protecting against rain and UV rays. You can choose between water-based or solvent-based products depending on what you're using and the surface you're applying them to. For outdoor use, we recommend a solvent-based or linseed oil-based black stain, as the solvent-based option is more durable and better suited to withstand weather conditions.

Black stain 100% opaque

There are different types of black stain. You can choose between a fully opaque black stain, a semi-transparent black stain, and a transparent black stain. Yes... there is a lot of choice! A 100% opaque black stain completely hides the wood grain for a uniform finish. This includes products like Koopmans Perkoleum, which offers full coverage after two coats for a smooth, even result.

What is semi-transparent black stain?

Semi-transparent black stain is a stain that provides good coverage while still allowing the wood grain to remain visible. Most often, these are impregnating stains like Koopmans Ecoleum or Topdeq Aquabeits. Here's how it works: the stain soaks into the wood and leaves a black colour behind. Because the stain penetrates the wood rather than sitting on top, the grain of the wood remains visible.

Transparent black stain

Transparent colours like ebony black or black wash can be mixed into products like Koopmans Perkoleum or Topdeq. Here’s what happens during this process. These are transparent (clear) products to which we add a small amount of black pigment. This is much less pigment than what is used for an opaque black stain! Consequently, the product does not fully cover, and the wood's texture is clearly visible. The more layers you apply, the more intense the colour will become. Typically, we recommend applying two layers of transparent black stain.

Black stain with visible wood grain

There are impregnating stains and opaque stains. If you use an impregnating black stain, the wood grain will remain beautifully visible. This is because the stain penetrates deep into the wood instead of sitting on top. This way, you add colour but allow the texture of the wood to shine through.

How many layers of black stain should I apply?

Many people ask, “How many layers of stain should I apply?” We recommend always applying two layers for a fully opaque effect. However, some products can provide a solid finish in just one coat. For example, Koopmans Ecoleum offers excellent coverage with just a single coat. Still, for the best coverage and optimal protection, two layers are generally recommended.

Should I sand the wood before staining?

Proper preparation is essential before applying stain. Decide which type of stain to use, whether coloured, transparent, or black. A good preparation of the wood surface is also crucial. Many people wonder whether they need to sand the wood before staining. Usually, the answer is yes. We recommend cleaning the surface thoroughly and lightly sanding it before applying stain. This ensures a smooth application and better adhesion.

How long does black stain protect the wood?

Black stain not only provides a stunning look for your outdoor wood but also offers excellent protection! By staining your outdoor wood with black stain, you'll protect it from the effects of weather for years. This way, you’ll not only have a beautiful black-stained shed but also long-lasting protection to withstand the elements.

What types of black stain are available?

There is a suitable black stain available for every surface. For example, there are stains for rough wood and smooth-sanded wood. You can also choose between water-based and solvent-based stains. Opaque stains can only be mixed into solid black colours using options like the RAL colour chart. The most common black shade is RAL 9005.

What brands of black stain are available?

We at Verfmenger have a wide range of stains. Options include brands like Koopmans and Jotun, as well as our own brand Verfmenger Prof. The brands available at Verfmenger include Verfijn, Koopmans, Tenco, Topdeq, Jotun, and VP.

Which black stain is the best?

Two types of black stain stand out. These are products from the Koopmans brand. Koopmans Perkoleum is designed for smooth-sanded wood and is available in all colours. Koopmans Ecoleum is meant for rough wood. Both are top-performing stains for their respective wood types.
