Most often, these are impregnating stains like Koopmans Ecoleum or Topdeq Aquabeits. Here's how it works: the stain soaks into the wood and leaves a black colour behind. Because the stain penetrates the wood rather than sitting on top, the grain of the wood remains visible.

Transparent black stain

Transparent colours like ebony black or black wash can be mixed into products like Koopmans Perkoleum or Topdeq. Here’s what happens during this process. These are transparent (clear) products to which we add a small amount of black pigment. This is much less pigment than what is used for an opaque black stain! Consequently, the product does not fully cover, and the wood's texture is clearly visible. The more layers you apply, the more intense the colour will become. Typically, we recommend applying two layers of transparent black stain.
